The Hsinchu Beimen Market is located within narrow lanes of the old city. The project employs low-rise volumes to balance with the urban fabric, using setbacks and interconnected circulation to create rest spaces and a pedestrian zone. A shaded plaza on the south acts as a buffer between the lively market and the city, serving as a forum for diverse activities. Along the west, a green belt connects the pedestrian flow to the Hsinchu Baseball Stadium, shaping a public space network. The plaza links to a semi-outdoor staircase that serves as an indoor-outdoor interface and spectator seating; meanwhile, vertical movement transforms it into an urban stage.
Order is the internal logic. Given the pre-existence of stalls as primary units, a modular grid forms the internal order, while line intersections manifest as cross-shaped steel columns. This modular system implies flexibility for future development. Finally, semi-transparent hollow PC panels form the exterior walls, allowing activities inside and outside to be mutually perceived. Together, these elements create a light, bright atmosphere, shaping a contemporary urban aesthetic.
